There is something I want to warn you about...

I've spent a lot of time talking about how some affiliate management solutions will charge you outrageous upfront prices... plus 100's of dollars in ongoing monthly fees that can add up to $11,500+ per year!

But I also want to warn you about about certain programs that try to take advantage of small businesses by luring you into their solution with a low up-front cost ($49 or so), and then charging you a "small percentage" on every sale you make.

This might sound reasonable... but do NOT fall for this!

This is how it works...

Suppose you sell a product for $30 and you offer affiliates a $12 commission for every sale they refer to you.

Many affiliate management solutions will ALSO charge you 30% of your "payout rate" on top of that $12! This means that your costs per sale now break down like this:

This is outrageous! While that $3.60 you pay in "transaction fees" may not SEEM like a lot of money, think of how quickly it would add up...

Suppose you sold 10 products per day (for a total of $36 in daily "transaction fees").

This means that you'll be giving $13,140 to your affiliate program provider every year -- just for the privilege of using them!

Of course, there are other systems out there that DON'T charge you "transaction fees," but they have other ways of luring you in with false hopes or pricing themselves out of the realm of most online entrepreneurs, including:

• Bare-bones "lite" versions. You buy into their program for "only" $1000, soon to discover that you need to buy a bunch of "add-ons" or "plug-ins" (which range in price from $99 to $699 per month) to make your affiliate program work properly.
  
  
• Big affiliate pools. They tell you that they have thousands of affiliates in their database just waiting to promote your products. Of course, only a tiny fraction of these people will ever promote YOUR product, as they are constantly bombarded with notifications of new affiliate programs. You'll still need to actively recruit affiliates if you want to be successful.
  
  
• Maintenance fees. Who knows what these fees are really for... As if most of these companies aren't charging you enough, they have to tack on an extra $250 or so a year to "maintain" your account!

... and so on! After everything's said and done, you'll have spent $2,000... $5,000... as much as $12,000 just to get your affiliate program up and running.

If you ask me, it takes a pretty big leap of faith to spend that kind of money just to launch an affiliate program (not to mention a pretty high ceiling on your credit card!) And frankly, I simply don't think it's right to ask struggling entrepreneurs to come up with this kind of money!
