We'll never forget the day our merchant account provider turned its back on us...

After having our account with them for over four years -- and paying them thousands of dollars in fees -- they had the nerve to strip us of our merchant account.

They mailed us a 30-day notice, explaining that our merchant account had originally been set up for mail-order sales, and now that we were accepting credit cards on the Internet, they felt we were violating our merchant agreement.

We called and pointed out that during our four year history with them, we'd had virtually NO chargebacks or cases of fraud -- which proved we were not a risk.

They didn't care.

We were devastated. Over 95% of our sales were credit cards orders and, in just 30 days, we would no longer be able to accept them!

Sounded Great -- At First"

So we hurried to get a new merchant account, and found a provider who promised not only to accept credit cards, but also to provide us with a turnkey e-commerce merchant package.

Here are the components you'll need:

  1. Shopping cart software. This allows your customers to pick up items throughout your site and put them in virtual "shopping carts". (Just like at the supermarket.)

  2. Secure server. This allows your customers to buy from you without worrying about fraud. Without a secure server, few people will buy from you.

  3. Gateway software. This processes your customers' credit cards instantly when they complete your order form.

    It gets their cards approved, transfers the money into your bank account, and sends email confirmations to both you and your customers.

Anyway, the good news was that we were approved for an e-commerce package (which included the secure server, shopping cart, and gateway software we just described).

The bad news?

After ten days, we called the provider to see why the shopping cart hadn't yet been installed -- and for that matter, why they hadn't called us to get the server info they needed to install the software.

Originally, they had promised us that this would be a painless, "hands free" process -- they said that they would do everything for us.

Now the truth came out!

"They" only provided the merchant accounts. The shopping cart and gateway software were installed by third parties they'd contracted!

Our business was at the mercy of SEVERAL companies who were failing to coordinate with each other...

"We Were Losing Money Every Day
The Software Wasn't Installed!"

So we called the gateway company directly.

After some prodding, they promised to install the software the following week. Ten days went by. When we called to check on the status of our account, they told us that the software was installed and working.

Boy, were we relieved!

But when we went to our site and tried to put an order through on our credit card to test the system...

IT DID NOT WORK!

Even worse, when we called them back they asked, "What did you do to screw it up"?

We were offended. we explained that we'd done nothing except try to place an order! It wasn't our fault it didn't work! They said they would look into it.

Another week went by...

Meanwhile, we were very frustrated and losing a lot of money. How would you feel?

Finally, they told us their software was working fine, and that the problem was with the shopping cart software. Of course, the shopping cart software was made by another company.

They steered us back to the original merchant account provider to find out if anything was wrong with our account. They told us that if this was not the case, then we should contact the shopping cart company.

We thought to ourselves...

"This is ridiculous! Another company is now in the loop! How many independent companies do we have to deal with to get the complete package we bought... the package that was supposed to be hassle free?!?"

When we called the original merchant account company, they told us that our account was in perfect condition... and that the problem was with the shopping cart software.

Then, when we called the shopping cart company, they blamed the problem on the gateway software.

When we called the gateway company again, they said their software had been installed on thousands of computers, worked perfectly, and that the problem was the shopping cart software!

In other words...they blamed each other and gave us the runaround!

We spent two months making phone calls, writing letters and email, yelling, screaming, and pleading with them -- and we still got nowhere! At that point, we were losing a fortune in business, and had to buy another shopping cart. We spent $400 out of our own pocket to fix THEIR mistake!

As it turns out, these aggravations are common today.

Thousands of online business owners are misled by companies who promise "complete packages" but in reality, contract outside companies to provide the e-commerce extras.
